About DFLOutfitters

Hi,

We're Brian and Sabrina and we are DFLOutfitters. Our story began many years ago growing up together at our local church. We were friends, and then sweethearts, and now married. We enjoy visiting the National Parks and the American west.

The story of DFLOutfitters began long before our small business ever began. We both grew up in hard-working, middleclass families in the Midwest. We attended the same private university in Kentucky and left college with a good chunk of school debt. Like most young couples we were trying to figure out life, family, jobs, and marriage so dealing with our school loans wasn’t on the short list of priorities for our family. In 2012, with 2 young children now added to the mix, we signed up for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University at our local church. Little did we know that decision would change the trajectory of our lives. We scaled back our life, prioritized generosity, and learned to live on a budget. Working the principles we learned from Financial Peace University, we started working towards paying off all consumer debt (everything but our mortgage). We accomplished that goal in 2015. Next we set our mortgage in our financial crosshairs. We scaled back even more in order to chip away at our home’s mortgage. And that’s when the next major event happened in our debt free journey.

We’ve always loved thrifting, going to auctions, and garage sales. On May 22, 2021 we went to an auction that changed our lives. It was nearing the end of the auction and a lot of buyers had already left. Sabrina bid on a bag full of purses, and won the lot for just a few dollars. She got the purse she wanted from the auction lot…along with a bag full of extra purses. Not having a need for all of them, she decided to post them on Facebook Marketplace. And they sold! We thought, “We might be on to something here!” Over the next couple months we began looking for items which had a resale value. Our side-hustle grew and we began realizing this could help us pay down our mortgage even faster. Brian expanded into selling used books on amazon and ebay and before long every spare minute not working our “real jobs” was spent working our side hustle. We were putting legit money down against our house even after expenses, fees, and taxes.

But then we hit a snag. Our kids began to complain. We spent all our time out finding items we could sell. On one hand we were doing well and paying down the mortgage. But on the other, we were spending all our time away from our kids. We knew the balance wasn’t healthy or God-honoring. So we began to slow down the side-hustle. We still looked for items to resell, but not as feverishly as before. We kept working, kept saving, kept a focus on generosity and finally in March of 2022 we paid off our house and became fully debt free! We still enjoy the side gig, but we shifted our focus. We wanted to keep the business going because it gave us extra money for fun expenditures like giving to our local church, vacations, and hobbies. But we also knew our business model needed to change for the health of our family.

So at the beginning of 2023 we bought a laser and began DFLOutfitters on Etsy. The laser allowed us to spend more time at home making products and less time outside the home sourcing products. This shift has been a good and healthy change for our family. In our name, “DFL” stands for DEBT FREE LIFE and “Outfitters” because we love all things outdoors and adventure based. We hope the name of our brand, and the story behind it are an encouragement to you. Money, debt, and budgets are a scary thing. But our story is the proof that you can change. You can improve. You can alter the trajectory of your life and family.

What we have to offer as a small business notwithstanding, if you ever need financial encouragement or just a nudge in the right direction. Reach out! No judgment or agenda beyond your wellbeing, here.

This is our story, this is our purpose, this is our passion.
